As a doctor that cares for patients with cancer, I see first-hand the impact of poor dietary and lifestyle choices destroying our health and robbing us of our longevity. We have gotten so far from how we were designed to live and eat, and I have witnessed how a therapeutic ketogenic diet and practice of intermittent fasting, can restore our metabolic flexibility and change clinical outcomes.

I am a sunflower, chasing the sun from Colorado and southern California in the summer to Mexico in the winter. My husband and I load up our two dogs and a cat and make the 4 day drive down south each winter.

  • Fun Fact

Keith holds a PhD from the University of Illinois. As a former scientific adviser at Chelsea FC, USA Track & Field and British Cycling, he has over 15 years of experience working with elite athletes where he studied physiological and functional adaptations of the musculoskeletal system to exercise and nutrition. He also is currently a Professor in the Departments of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behaviour and Physiology and Membrane Biology at UC Davis.

My colleagues and I have shown that a ketogenic diet can extend median lifespan by 13%. Beyond the extension of life, keto also has a beneficial effect on muscle and brain function in old individuals. Understanding how keto does this could help us extend health span in millions of people around the world.

Keto slowed the relentless progression of my young son’s brain tumour. Though it wasn’t a cure, it gave us six more precious years together. Now, I share what I’ve learned through my writing, speaking, consulting, and advocacy for the diet.

I see what an impact it can make on one person’s life in terms of enhanced cognition, quality of life and physical mobility. When done with proper planning and attention to detail, the ketogenic diet is a metabolic, therapeutic lifestyle intervention that has a top down approach to changing the system as a whole. This way, we can put care into how we approach keto.

When I was a child I went to cooking classes and science camp which influenced my passion for nutritional science today.

Because ketones have the sweeping potential to prevent a range of chronic diseases that stem from insulin resistance, ketosis can change how people age and their ability to enjoy life.

Dr. Brian Lenzkes

  • Bio
  • Why Keto?
  • Fun Fact

Dr. Brian Lenzkes holds an MD from USC Medical School as well as a BS in Biology from UC Irvine. He is an internal medicine doctor focused on clinical nutrition, and the founder of LowCarbMD San Diego. He practiced 17 years in a standard medical practice but changed to the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model in order to better educate patients about the importance of lifestyle and nutrition in improving health. Brian is the co-host of the Low Carb MD podcast.

Like many, I struggled with gaining weight despite following the published guidelines and exercising regularly. After changing to a low carb diet, I lost weight for the first time in my adult life and markedly improved my health. I lost 60 lbs and improved my biomarkers. I began teaching my patients about the impact of dietary changes and helped 11 Type II diabetics to come off of insulin within 6 months – something I never saw in my previous 15 years of medicine.

I love spending time at home with my wife, two daughters and two labradoodles in San Diego, CA. I have travelled to some of the most remote areas in the world as a medical missionary and have learned many important life lessons (and met the greatest people) in those places.

Nicholas Norwitz, PhD, MHP

  • Bio
  • Why Keto?
  • Fun Fact

Nicholas graduated Valedictorian of Dartmouth College with a bachelor's degree in cellular biology. He subsequently completed his PhD in neurometabolism and ketogenics at Oxford University and is pursuing an MD degree at Harvard Medical School. Nicholas has published peer-reviewed original research, reviews, theory papers, textbook chapters as well as blogs, lectures, and a cookbook for lay public education. He’s a certified metabolic health practitioner (MHP) with the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners.

Nicholas’s passion for keto and “Food as Medicine” derives from a personal history. At eighteen years old, he developed severe osteoporosis, a bone disease that crippled his running career. Next, Nick developed ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease so severe as to cause him to lose twenty percent of his body weight in weeks and end up in the palliative care ward of a hospital with a heart rate in the twenties. These conditions reversed on a ketogenic diet.

As an adolescent, I was a competitive athlete. My first osteoperotic fracture occurred six weeks before I was due to run the 2014 Boston Marathon, being the youngest time-qualified runner out of all 37,000 athletes. Because of the fracture, I couldn’t run the race. So, I completed the 26.2-mile trek on crutches.

The generalized habits of overeating or strict dieting have failed to produce a healthier society. Skyrocketing levels of diabetes, obesity, cardiac disease and cancer are well-documented and a ketogenic focus has proven to counter all of our most common causes of illness and death. If a healthier population is our goal, keto is part of the solution.

  • Why Keto?
  • Fun Fact

Kristi holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Plant Science from the University of Guelph and is a former Division 1 athlete. She is a science writer focused on the therapeutic and preventative applications of ketogenic diets, fasting, and metabolic therapies. Her work has been featured in places such as the Zero fasting app, MindBodyGreen, Paleo Magazine and ketonutrition.org.

The ketogenic diet is the most profound example of food as medicine due to its potential to prevent and treat disease. The power of ketones extends far beyond its role as an alternative energy source, and emerging science supports their beneficial effects on aging, neuro-protection, and metabolic health.

I developed my career as a science writer while traveling the world and have lived in 13 different countries while working remotely.
